The city reached 858,178 inhabitants as of January 1, 2026, according to provisional municipal census data. The previous official figure, validated by the INE for 2025, was 840,792 inhabitants. That is, in barely a year the municipal register has recorded more than 17,000 additional people.

Of the 858,178 inhabitants recorded in the provisional 2026 municipal census, 181,140 have foreign nationality. That represents roughly one in five people currently living in Valencia.
And diversity is not new, but it is increasingly becoming a part of the city's identity.
In 2025 population data, among the foreign nationalities with the largest presence were Colombia, Italy, Venezuela, Ukraine, China, and Russia, among others.
That means that when we walk through Valencia, we are not just sharing a city with hundreds of thousands of people.
We are also sharing the city with hundreds of thousands of different stories.
More people doesn't always mean more connections
Here is the paradox.
You can live in a city with hundreds of thousands of inhabitants and feel like you know very few people.
You can get on a crowded subway, work in an office full of colleagues, study in a classroom with dozens of people, or sit on a terrace full of tables... and still spend the day without having a truly new conversation.
